British ceramicist Julie Nelson uses the materiality of clay as a means to explore the natural world. Science, curiosity and collecting are the themes explored through her studio ceramics. Random variation is achieved by ‘thinking with her hands’ in stoneware and porcelain, cutting away and adding on, in an intuitive way. Layers of slip, oxides and glazes accentuate elemental and microscopic detail within the surface texture. Julie studied ceramics in London, specializing in sculptural forms and now works from the coastal city of Brighton, known as “London-on-sea”. Her collections, based on biology, botany and landscape, express the visual regularities found across nature, exploring pattern and entropy, whilst highlighting the connectedness of everything.
